Would I trade the US being a recognized soccer power in exchange for Mexico winning the WC 5 times?
I may not give much of a shit about sports but as a Panamanian I have to do everything in my power prevent any deal that makes Mexico a recognized soccer power from happening. So if you do choose to make that trade look forward to my interference.:p

Yeah It's the ultimate Monkey's paw.

OK. does anyone want to go through the entire list of World Cup champions and see if any Guatemalans are playing for Mexico?
(To give you an idea of how little my Alma Mater cared about Football (the US kind), the Football team went undefeated my senior year. The school newspaper took a poll and less than 25% of the students knew) There is Division III and then there is Division III with the Football coach recruiting replacement players from the Ultimate Frisbee team and giving away Floppy disks to get the students to come to the games....)

I’ll save you the trouble lol none of the names I dropped are Guatemalans

Choices, choices!

Wait, 1956 was canceled?

I'm now worried that either there is a significant conflict at that time, or this world's worst pandemic hit in the mid-'50s...
I think @KingSweden24 mention earlier that there is a significant economic depression in the late 50s, and Qing remnant in Manchuria also cease to existed around that time. So at the very least this period will be pretty tumultuous.

Also something will happen in Near East in 1953 too it seems.

When did he say that?

Yeah, and looking at the lists of hosts, the three hosts prior to the 1956 cancellation are Sweden, USA and Hungary and with that it seems almost a given that South America would have 1956. Argentina and Brazil had both hosted by that point and the first rehosting (that we can see) isn't until 1964. So my *guess* is either Paraguay or Chile.

I still think Chile will be too much of an international pariah. I know socialism ITTL isn't the four-letter word it is in our timeline but there's still plenty of reactionaries in power worldwide (UK, Canada, France among others) who will scuttle an attempt to give the WC to Chile.

Glad you’ve picked up on them Easter eggs 👀

What are you referring to here?

Yeah the 1950s of TTL are not the 1950s of OTL… that’s for sure

Beyond merely socialism (UEFA held events in the Eastern Bloc and the USSR probably hosts the 1990 FIFA World Cup sans the 1980/84 boycott drama giving Havelange cold feet), keep in mind Chile is much poorer ITTL, so it may not present very impressively as a potential host.

Plus, you know, the major economic depression in LatAm in the late 1950s/early 1960s

Well, one of TTL's features has been that every continent gets its very own mini Great War. Perhaps during the 50s it'll be Asia's turn.
