DBWI: Kurt Cobain hadn't died right after Nevermind

A bit of a blast from the past, but remember the early 90's? That was when an unexpected new band called Nirvana tore onto the music scene, reached number one, and then left just as soon as it arrived.

In 1991, the band, which was from the Seattle area, released the album Nevermind. It's a solid album all around, imo, but of course, it grew in popularity off of the runaway hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The album starting selling out, and it seemed like the band was on their way.

But on the night of January 11th, 1992, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Kurt Cobain was found dead of a heroin overdose. What a waste! This had just been the day when the band had performed on Saturday Night Live for the first time, and on top of that, this was the same day when Nevermind had knocked Michael Jackson off of the top of the Billboard charts. But drugs ruined the band just when it seemed on the cusp. Kurt was dead, and Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl went their separate ways afterwards.

How much more potential do you think Nirvana had? If Cobain had lived, could they have kept up the momentum? Apparently, Kurt thought he was "selling out" with Nevermind, which raises questions on where the band would've chosen to go from there. If they had gone back to their earlier, gritty garage band sound...eh, I don't know. Bleach isn't exactly my cup of tea.
