The Judge, or the Evening Redness in the West (2014)

The Judge, or the Evening Redness in the West is a 2014 American post-western (disputed: post-samurai) erotic-grotesque / war film directed by Terrence Malick. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall with Vera Farmiga, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Dax Shepard and Billy Bob Thornton in supporting roles. The film adapts the Cormack McCarthy novel of a similar name, Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West. Largely produced as an insult (dubious: see talk) to the production of Akira Kurosawa's Ran by the failed Hollywood Director, Malick was primarily funded by a clique of esoteric westaboo (non-neutral language) Zen bigots (disputed: see talk) from Nihon. The Judge was serially refused classification in many major areas despite its success at film festivals. Malick's violence was considered too aesthetic and as standing in its own moment. The film is often compared to Malick's prior post-western Badlands (1973).
