WI: Nintendo partnered with Panasonic on the SNES-CD

As you may know, Nintendo was going to team up with Sony on a CD-ROM add-on for the Super NES, as well as a hybrid console named the PlayStation. However, the partnership would have granted Sony more creative control, which Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi began to grow wary of, and deemed the contract unacceptable, so Yamauchi sent Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa and executive Howard Lincoln over to the Netherlands to negotiate a more favourable contract with Philips. However, that contract too fell through and we ended up getting those memetic Mario and Zelda CD-i games. In the end, the SNES-CD never ended up releasing and Sony would go on to create their own console for the next generation, the PlayStation. Panasonic, on the other hand, manufactured the failed 3DO, and the disc formats for the Nintendo GameCube, the Wii and the Wii U.

But what if Nintendo, after ditching their former partner Sony, went with not Philips as their new partner, but instead, partnered with Panasonic to develop the SNES-CD? How would that happen? How would that affect the 3DO? How would that affect Sony? What could the video game industry look like from there on out? How would Sega do? Would the SNES-CD even release?

This looks interesting. Would Panasonic’s 3DO franchises be a part of Nintendo as well? If those games are then Nintendo’s image changes big time; especially, if Panasonic hands over their would be 3DO franchises.

The founder of E.A., Trip Hawkins, would be making this deal meaning this timeline has potential for a Nintendo and early E.A. team up. Maybe Nintendo makes E.A. a good company in this timeline?

Here is a list of games that E.A. published around the time:

There's another factor that would influence Nintendo should they work together with Panasonic: all three of the media storage format wars. DVD's vs. MMCD, Sd Cards vs. Sony's memory sticks, and the Hd DVD vs. Blu-ray. Panasonic was pro Blu-ray but I personally believe they used that partisan deal to create the Wii and Wii U's optical discs.

How would that affect the 3DO?
3DO might relly more on Goldstar and Sanyo as the manufacturers of their gizmo, otl 3DO mess were exotic parts(the sub system chip for 2D and 3D acceleration) that make very hard to reduce cost and the fact it doesn't have a real owner made unable to do dumping (just like Sony did with PS1 promising supplier massive order by volume to lower prices and even then Sony loss lead to strangle Sega in the west) meaning manufacturers have to put the whole development cost at the price tag, and this might kill the M2 too as only Panasonic cared about it.

owever, the partnership would have granted Sony more creative control,
I going tell you a secret, that contract was a myth, the real reason why Nintendo killed the deal it wasn't the CD, it was the scp-700. Sony was using Nintendo as a Troy horse to get into videogames and Nintendo realized it when Sony refuse to give the SPC 700 specs for Nintendo own SNES development kits (Ie the ones Nintendo send to third parties) and Sony ended up sending their own sound development kits. that is when they realize Sony was a rat, plus Nintendo learned about Sony system d and asked Sony about it and they hid it as fear they realize that Nintendo found their tricks.

Which direction do you see Nintendo taking ITTL?

A deal that allows their next console still use cd's but allows them to control piracy via the format.
Considering Panasonic will help Nintendo get CDs first then that means Final Fantasy 7 comes to Nintendo’s console first. Question is how E.A. alters Nintendo’s presence in this timeline.

Nothing, OTL EA was just another third party for 3DO once trip was forced to abandon EA during 3DO Development.

Are you planning to include S.N.K. and their work on the soon to be Nintendo 3DO? Nintendo might team up with them in this timeline.

That is a good question. But that would also fall into the same category that working with Sony would entail due to the Neo Geo MVS.

A second question that needs to be asked is how far is Nintendo willing to go to lock down Panasonic in the event that they want to make software?

That is a great point.

SNK is a third party at the time so they always can publish their games anyway

Knowing that Nintendo was willing to lend Mario to Phillips, Nintendo would make Sure Panasonic is up to the standard of a first party(or second party?). That's something will come up on the negotiations

Potential ip's that could be loaned to Panasonic for the snes-cd: pilotwings, f-zero, star fox.

Potential studios that can serve under a hypothetical Panasonic interactive: Crystal Dynamics (founded in 1992), Way forward (founded in 1990), Naughty Dog ( founded in 1984 as jam software but changes the name in 1989) and Telenet Japan aka Wolf Team (founded in 1986).

Honestly thought maybe Panasonic or Toshiba could do a SNES-CD for Nintendo. If Panasonic works with Nintendo, then no 3do so no Plumbers don't Wear Ties. If Toshiba worked with Nintendo, then when HD-DVD became a thing, Nintendo would be the biggest supporter of the format.

Just some food for thought.
